ONE EXTERIOR DAY
Frequently Asked Questions
My screenplay isn’t importing correctly…
Screenplays must be a PDF formatted in the industry standard layout for 8.5×11″ printing. Screenplays exported into PDF format from Final Draft or Screenwriter should be compatible without any adjustments. If you think your screenplay is formatted correctly please submit a bug report here and describe the issue.
What voices can I use…
We currently have support for any iOS voice that you have installed in your iPhone Settings. To install more voices go to your iOS Settings > General > Accessibility > Speech > Voices. The built-in voices vary greatly in quality, some are decades old. Additionally there are often “Enhanced” versions of voices which can be downloaded to increase quality. Built-in voices are always available and will work without an internet connection.
The voices still sound kinda robotic…
We now have an offer two optional voice engines which use Cloud AI for text-to-speech and improves the quality of voices immensely. This option will send the text one line at a time over the internet via secure SSL and leverages the power of Google Wavenet and Amazon Polly cloud computing. However, since this method uses third parties you will want to familiarize yourself with the privacy policy of those organizations to see if they suit your purposes.
What kind of music can I play in the background?
We have built in support to control Apple Music. But you can also use any other app that play audio media like Spotify & SoundCloud. Just open OneExteriorDay first and then open your preferred music player.
The background music is too loud…
Some music tracks, especially commercial pop music, is mastered much louder than classical music or movie soundtracks. Even though iOS ducks the music under the voices, the music can still be overpowering. Unfortunately iOS doesn’t provide us the ability to control the music volume directly in other apps.
There is however one work-around that can help. Go into Settings>Music and turn on [Soundcheck] which should bring all your music closer together in volume. Additionally you also have the option to select an EQ setting which can muffle or reduce the music further. If you are using another source for music, like Spotify, then there is nothing we are able to do at this time.
The App stops speaking when I put the screen to sleep, is it possible to have it continue while sleeping…
Unfortunately Apple does not allow this because the app is actively parsing the lines for different speakers and it’s not currently possible to do this in the background. To prolong your battery life, we recommend that you dim the screen all the way down.
Does this app support CarPlay…
It does not currently support the CarPlay interface directly, but the app was designed to be simple enough to use in a handsfree dock, while connected to your car audio through bluetooth. Steering wheel controls will switch background music or change the overall volume as usual. Other functions would require using the iPhone screen.
Is there an iPad version…
There isn’t a native iPad version, but it will run on an iPad in iPhone mode. If this is important to you please let us know.
